The information on this page is intended to help you find a Shiatsu school near you. On the right of this page are links to help you find a Shiatsu school in any particular area of the United Kingdom, just click on the area you are interested in.

The Shiatsu Society can ratify some aspects of a Shiatsu school’s curriculum (see below, Training with a Shiatsu School). Should a Shiatsu school have some ratification this will be indicated as a part of the school’s listing below. This ratification provides some assurance as to what that Shiatsu school teaches.

Currently it is not the Shiatsu Society’s responsibility to monitor what is taught or the quality of teaching at any of the schools that are not ratified. Please note that a Shiatsu school does not need to have any formal ratification to be listed on this page. A school is listed below if the school has requested to be listed and as far as The Shiatsu Society is aware that school is teaching Shiatsu to a reasonable standard and is acting in accord with the Shiatsu Society’s Aims and Objectives.

Should you feel that a particular Shiatsu school is behaving inappropriately or you have reason to request that we do not promote any particular school on this website then please contact us.

The Shiatsu Society makes every effort to promote Shiatsu, to maintain the good name of Shiatsu and to maintain a sufficiently high quality of instruction of Shiatsu. However, the Shiatsu Society cannot be held responsible for any aspect of the teaching or any other aspect of any non-ratified Shiatsu school.

Training with a Shiatsu School

Most schools are headed by experienced practitioners, registered as teachers with the Shiatsu Society, and running courses which include the syllabus set by the Shiatsu Society. The areas covered include practical shiatsu techniques; the Classical Meridian system, Five Element Theory; Zen Shiatsu - Theory and Practice; Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), as well as orthodox western anatomy, physiology and pathology. Other topics include communication and listening skills, taking case histories, self-development exercises, such as Do-in and Chi kung.

The training requirements require a minimum of 500 hours studying shiatsu, of which 350 must be with a Shiatsu Society Teacher. The remainder may be with someone with the skills to teach the required material. Most schools hold end of year assessments. A number of schools have had their theory assessment ratified by the Society, this means that they fulfil the core curriculum. This means students do not take another theory paper in order to join the Shiatsu Society Register. Presently, schools hold their own practical exams, which lead to their awarding their students their own Diploma, but to join the Shiatsu Society Register, it is necessary to additionally pass an assessment day and submit case studies or carry put a (PGY) Post Graduate Year. We have indicated which schools have been verified for the PGY in the list below.

Most schools have a prospectus so it is important that you make contact to check that the school will meet your needs. Do not hesitate to contact the Principal of the School for further clarification. A number of Schools run their courses at weekends. Some also run block residential courses or mid-week courses.

Obviously, an important focus of Shiatsu is hands-on practice, so it is essential you have people you know to practice on during your training. Often students may also practice on each other outside classes. Everyone is different at working out who they feel most comfortable at practising and developing their practical Shiatsu skills on. This may also change as you go through your training, beginning with friends and family, and extending to practice on work-mates or other people in your community.
