The birds are singing and getting frisky – it must be Spring!  So in keeping with the season we have lots of ideas for you to take your Shiatsu out there.  When doing demonstrations in public there are the folk who want to know what you are doing and why, and there are those who sit or lie there and say ‘that is wonderful’.  Shiatsu, though a word we love, is not obvious in what it is, so it is up to us to get out there and spread the word.  We have got several articles by students and a teacher about that tricky move to stepping out into the area of treating the public, sharing knowledge and setting up in practice.  Learning Shiatsu is one thing but making your living from it can be another.  Some graduates expect it all to happen too quickly and give up before things take off; others expect everyone to know they are qualified because they have a certificate and do not manage the advertising well.  I hope these articles give you some ideas and some inspiration.  The more aware the public is about Shiatsu then the busier we will all be.  European Shiatsu Day comes in September, it is the edge that will help you get articles published in the local paper or just a free advert of a class or taster sessions.

We conclude Deborah Valentine Smith’s article on tendinomuscular meridians.  For those of you who want to know more, there are good pictures of them in Peter Deadman’s book @A Manual of Acupuncture’, where he calls them sinew meridians in the more traditional way.  I have put a couple of pictures in for those, who have not seen them before.

Regulation seems to creep in to more and more areas, though it may not inspire you, it is useful to know where we are in the Shiatsu world and Elizabeth Davies has given us a thorough overview.  There is a longer version of this article on the website if you want to know more.

Bill Palmer also has an article about his style of working bringing psychotherapy into Shiatsu.  Bill has contributed a lot to the Shiatsu Society News in the past; his style of Movement Shiatsu is very different to other styles, but comes from the same root.

If you want to get out and meet other Shiatsu Practitioners then there is the Shiatsu Congress in the UK and the European Shiatsu Congress in Switzerland, both are highly recommended.  They will both give you a buzz and enthuse you to keep working with this wonderful therapy called Shiatsu.
